Beginners Guide for Writing a Short Essay

Writing a short essay is an easy and fun way to learn more about the topic. It will help you go deeper into the issue. In this guide, we will provide you with some basic information on how to complete your first short essay on any topic. Let us begin!

#1 Topic selection

The first thing you need to do when writing an essay is picking a good topic. Here are some tips for selecting a good topic:

  • Avoid topics discussed many times before by other people or on social media websites such as Reddit or Facebook. You can also use our search bar to see what has been written about the subject already! Please note that we don't allow direct copying of content from other sources. * Make sure that your chosen topic is interesting for you and that you have at least a few points to say about it.
  • Choose a topic that not many people have written about. Do a bit of research before starting your essay. Search Google for other essays on the topic or if there are lots out there, try to find something unique in your approach or take an unusual stance on the issue.
  • * If possible, avoid politically sensitive topics as they can be hazardous to your health!

#2 Introduction

The introduction is used to familiarise your reader with the topic and how you will approach it in this short essay. You should include the following information:

  • The title of the paper - make sure that it's catchy and tells readers straight away what kind of content they can expect to find in the paper.
  • The name of your chosen topic and a quick description of its importance and relevance to the subject at hand - will help the reader understand why you selected the topic;
  • Not every great essay moves straight into its content; some make it better to engage your readers with an example or two first. You may choose to use such an introduction as well. It should be quite short (maybe 3-4 sentences) as you want to catch your audience's attention as soon as possible;
  •  A reference for further reading if needed.

#3 Body paragraphs

Following on from the introductory paragraph, each body paragraph needs to present a specific point about your chosen topic:

  • After introducing your chosen issue, you should present a thesis statement in the first sentence of your body paragraph. The thesis statement tells readers what they will learn about the topic from this particular paragraph. Here's an example: "Lance Armstrong is one of the most successful cyclists in history, his seven Tour de France wins placing him just one victory behind Eddy Merckx."
  • You need to use evidence and examples throughout your essay so that your argument becomes stronger and convincing to its audience. Make sure you keep all information relevant and don't ramble on too much;

Try to include at least 3-4 sentences per each point made, or one idea presented for every new sentence or piece of evidence used;

Conclusion - as previously mentioned, not all essays start with the introduction. Some writers prefer to engage their readers with a few body paragraphs first to present their ideas gradually and then wrap them all up together in the conclusion paragraph.

#4 Reference list

As with any other homework assignment, your short essay needs to be properly referenced if needed. Here are some things you should take into consideration when listing references:

  • Make sure all references used are relevant to your chosen issue; make use of Google Scholar or similar resources if necessary;
  •  Cite all sources used throughout the paper, either using MLA in-text citations or listing them all in a reference list at the end of your paper. Never leave any in-text references out and never use Wikipedia as a source;
  •  The formatting of your essay doesn't matter here, but for MLA in-text citations, you need to follow the following format: " (Author, date). Title.

Can You Show Me Short Essay Examples?

In the mid-1990s, Swedish researcher Hans Rosling was faced with a question from his son: "What is the percentage of girls attending school in Bangladesh?" He had access to data that showed how many children were enrolled in primary school; however, his statistical software only reported statistics based on percentages. Without access to any software that would allow him to determine what local Bengali speakers would consider an educated adult (Rosling & Mäler 2012), he had no way of providing an accurate response. Rosling's experience is one example of the challenges researchers face when tackling human development statistics questions (UNESCO 2015).

Since 1960, the United Nations has collected and published data on various aspects of life in countries worldwide. The specific metrics used to document these changes are referred to as human development statistics, and they are organized within three interconnected indices: health, education, and income (UNESCO 2015).

UNESCO's 2015 Human Development Report indicates that since 1970 life expectancy has increased by an average of five years worldwide; that between 2000 and 2012, there was a 41 per cent increase in the number of children enrolled at primary school level; and that during the same period gross domestic product per capita adjusted for purchasing power increased by one half (UNESCO 2015). However, what is not easily evident from this report is how much progress has been made in urban areas compared with rural regions (Moss & Satterthwaite 2014).

Statistical literacy is a vital skill for those who wish to understand the world around them. Rosling's inability to access contextual information about education in Bangladesh illustrates the limitations of human development statistics. It serves as a reminder that much can be learned from a deeper investigation of these numbers.

#5 Conclusion

After reading this short guide, one can be easily misled into thinking that writing such an essay is easy because there's only so much you can write about anything, right? But it's not really like that - sometimes it may seem like too little has been said on your chosen issue and your arguments haven't been presented convincingly enough, which is why we decided to include some bonus tips:

Think of a better way to present your idea -

There are different ways to talk about the same issue. Maybe you can find a more effective way of conveying an idea, or perhaps you need to change the structure of your essay completely;

Listening to lectures and reading from academic papers can help -

They can provide valuable information for short essays as well as offer tips on how it's done correctly;

Do not neglect to proofread -

Checking if everything is spelt correctly and all citations are up-to-date is really important even though you have a great essay. You've worked hard on it, so don't let this be marred by errors that could have been easily fixed.

Here, it would help if you thanked your reader for sticking with you till the end of the paper, briefly reviewed all points made in each body paragraph, and provided a final verdict on the topic being discussed.
